Is Cape Point worth it?

Cape Point is the best coastal day near Cape Town, and also a long, windy one that now costs a foreign adult R874 in gates before the tour. Here is who it suits, who should skip it and how to get the most from it.

Yes, for most first-time visitors to Cape Town. The cliffs at Cape Point, the drive along Chapman's Peak and the penguins at Boulders Beach make one of the best days in South Africa, and a tour from $40 takes care of the driving. It is not a cheap day once the gates are added, and the weather can shut down the view.

This is our verdict, built on the official fees, the tour listings and what guests write about them. We don't claim visits we haven't made.

The quick answer

Go if it is your first trip to Cape Town and you have at least three days: Cape Point plus the penguins is the best day out of the city. Skip it if you only care about penguins (Boulders alone is shorter), if fog is forecast or if R874 in gates breaks the budget. Pick the full day if you can spare it; the half day suits a tight schedule.

Is Cape Point worth a visit?

Yes, for the cliffs, the lighthouse walk, Chapman's Peak and the penguins in one day. It is less worth it on a foggy day or if you only want penguins.

What makes it special is the combination. You drive one of the world's great coastal roads, stand at the Cape of Good Hope, climb to a lighthouse 200 metres above the sea, then watch African penguins on a beach in Simon's Town. No other day near Cape Town packs that much in.

What it isn't: Africa's southern tip, or the place where two oceans meet. Both claims belong to Cape Agulhas. Go for what Cape Point is, and it delivers. Guests say as much: "Really good experience. Get to see a lot of beautiful sites of Cape Town - all in one day."

Who should skip Cape Point?

Penguin-only visitors, anyone with one day in Cape Town and Table Mountain still to do, and anyone on a day of thick fog.

  • Penguins only: Boulders Beach alone is a shorter trip with one gate fee (R282 from 1 November 2026) instead of two.
  • One day in Cape Town: do Table Mountain first. Or take the Table Mountain combo, which fits the cableway and Cape Point into 10 hours.
  • Tight budgets: R874 in gates per foreign adult is more than the tour itself. If that hurts, the city and the free beaches are better value.
  • Car sickness: Chapman's Peak is all bends. Sit at the front and take something before pickup.

Half day or full day at Cape Point?

The full day, if you have it. For about $4 more you get Hout Bay, lunch in Simon's Town and about an hour with the penguins instead of 25 minutes.

The half day runs 5 to 6 hours: 20 minutes at the Cape of Good Hope, 45 at the lighthouse, 25 at Boulders. That works, and guests like the pace: "First of all, the tour is superbly timed, so you have enough time to see and enjoy everything." Another found it "maybe a bit fast paced at the destinations, but that is to be expected".

The full day takes about 10 hours and breathes. For families, slow walkers or anyone who wants to stop where they like, the private day from $151 gives an hour at each main stop. The tour cost guide puts all five side by side.

What is the best weather for Cape Point?

A clear, calm day. The southeaster blows hard from about September to March and fog can hide the lighthouse, so check the forecast the day before and move your date if needed.

The strong southeasterly wind, the "Cape Doctor", blows mostly from September to March (Wikipedia). It clears the air but can make the clifftops hard work. Fog is the bigger risk: it was the reason the old lighthouse failed. If you wake to a white sky, the view may not come back until afternoon.

All five tours cancel free up to 24 hours before, so book early in summer and watch the forecast. Winter (June to August) brings rain and wind from the northwest, but also fewer people and whales in False Bay from about May, peaking in October (Cape Point). Gate hours are 06:00 to 18:00 from October to March and 07:00 to 17:00 from April to September.

Is Cape Point safe? Baboons and cliffs

Yes, with common sense. Never feed the baboons, keep food out of sight and car windows shut, stay behind the rails and don't swim at Dias Beach.

  • Baboons: Cape Point's own rules say baboons used to people "can be dangerous", so watch from a distance (Cape Point). They know what a lunch bag looks like and open unlocked car doors.
  • Cliffs: do not climb over the rails or walls; there are blind drops to the sea.
  • The sea: currents at Dias Beach make swimming a bad idea (Cape Town Tourism). Freak waves have killed fishermen on these rocks.
  • Driving: 60 km/h on the main road, 40 km/h on side roads, and be out of the reserve by sunset.
  • In Cape Town: a hotel pickup removes the usual worries about parking and leaving valuables in a car.

What else is there to do on the Cape Peninsula?

Hout Bay harbour and its seals, Chapman's Peak, Boulders penguins, lunch in Simon's Town and the shark spotters at Muizenberg. Most tours string them together.

The penguins are the second reason to go. Boulders counted 790 breeding pairs in 2026, up from 698 the year before, about 2,528 birds of a critically endangered species (SANParks). On the full day you get about an hour there.

Hout Bay has seals in the harbour and an optional 45-minute boat to Seal Island. Simon's Town is a naval town with a long main street for lunch. Muizenberg and its shark spotters close the loop on the False Bay side, where the water is warmer.

Is 3 days in Cape Town enough, and where does Cape Point fit?

Three days is enough for the highlights: Table Mountain and the city, Cape Point and the penguins, then the winelands or a beach day. Give Cape Point the clearest day.

  • Day 1: Table Mountain by cableway in the morning (R475 online, Table Mountain Cableway), then Bo-Kaap and the V&A Waterfront.
  • Day 2: Cape Point and Boulders on the full-day tour. Keep it flexible and swap with day 1 or 3 if the weather turns.
  • Day 3: Kirstenbosch, the winelands, or a lazy beach day at Camps Bay.

With only two days, put Table Mountain and Cape Point on the same day with the combo tour. It's long, but it covers both.

Two icons in one day: the cableway, the penguins and Cape Point from $46.

Frequently asked questions

What is so special about Cape Point?

The cliffs, the two lighthouses and the view over two coasts, on a peninsula that also has penguins, seals and one of the best coastal roads in the world.

How much time do you need at Cape Point?

About 2 hours inside the reserve covers both capes and the lighthouse. With Chapman's Peak and Boulders, plan a half day at least and a full day if you can.

Is Cape Point worth it in winter?

Yes, on a clear day. Winter is quieter, and whales are in False Bay from about May. Rain and wind can cancel the view, so stay flexible.

Is Cape Point worth it with kids?

Yes. The penguins win them over, and under-6s ride the funicular free. Children aged 2 to 11 pay the child gate rate.
